Inaugural Torchbearers Class Begins

History is an important tool in defining the unique culture of a people. Preserving the narratives and artifacts is important, but to truly honor history we must use the legacy of the past to build a better future for succeeding generations.

The Gospel Music Haus and Museum will use the artistic, cultural, and political lessons of the past to help develop future artists, leaders, and citizens. An early example is the Torchbearers project, a program to develop ethical leadership in a cadre of young professionals.

Using the lessons of history as an organizational platform for personal insight and community connections, Torchbearers has explored what it means to build personal leadership skills and the tools for building collaborations that make differences in work, family, and social communities.

The inaugural Torchbearers class began July 2021 and is now drawing to a conclusion. The sessions were led by V. Michael McKay, Yolanda Adams, David Goldstein, and special guests invited to speak on specific topics. The participants have been encouraged to develop a leadership style that is intentional, purposeful, ethical, and focused on the concept of legacy: the lessons we leave for those whose lives we touch.

Some of the topics that were discussed are:

• Interdisciplinary Studies and Considerations
• How Far Is Too Far?: You, Me, and Social Media
• Trichotomy: A Study of Mind, Body, and Soul
• Actions Speak Louder Than Words
• Ubuntu — Building Community: Two are Better than One
