The Premise
Back to the Future is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for some and an eye-opening encounter for others to experience worship in the African-American Church as it was prior to 1980. It was a time when we dressed in our “Sunday clothes” (suits, ties, dresses, and hats), opened services with deacon devotions and choir processionals, and were ministered to by robed choirs in choir stands singing anthems, hymns sung from hymn books, spiritual songs, and worship liturgy. Services were devoid of jeans, sneakers, and baseball caps; praise and worship teams and leaders; webcast streaming and LCD screens; stems, drum tracks, and synthesized keyboards.
What We Hope to Accomplish
The intent is to remember, respect, honor, and appreciate our history and learn from it in a way that enhances current and future worship and continues to honor the Gospel message and the Kingdom.
